With women, for a lifetimeTM Commendation
Women's Wellness & Maternity Center (Madisonville, TN)
Women’s Wellness & Maternity Center (WWMC) is a community-owned freestanding birth center entering its 20th year of being With women, for a lifetime™; providing full scope care for women and newborns (up to 10 days).
WWMC began seeing clients in November 1983 with its first client birth coming in January 1984. Throughout their nearly two decades of service, the staff certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), all ACNM members, have met the ever-changing needs of a diverse client base by developing innovative solutions.
WWMC began an evening clinic and a Saturday well women program in order to make prenatal care, childbirth classes, and annual exams more available to working women or those whose partners had to work during normal business hours. WWMC added a Spanish speaking CNM in order to serve a growing Latino population and secured a March of Dimes grant to fund outreach programs to combat Monroe County’s teen pregnancy rate, one of the highest in Tennessee. Staff CNMs are currently developing a program to help lower the 50% pre-pregnancy smoking rate and help mothers stay smoke-free after their baby is born.
WWMC began staffing health department clinics in adjoining counties when obstetrics or family planning providers were forced out of practice by rising costs and low reimbursement rates.
For nearly two decades, Women’s Wellness & Maternity Center CNMs have served as preceptors for nursing, nurse-midwifery and medical students from around the country including students from: Vanderbilt, The University of Michigan, CNEP and others.
Since 1997, WWMC staff CNMs have held birthing privileges at Sweetwater Hospital in order to attend women desiring continuous fetal monitoring and/or an epidural.
Women’s Wellness & Maternity Center has embodied “the heart of midwifery” by providing friendly, safe, accessible and affordable health care for nearly 20 years.
