With women, for a lifetimeTM Commendation
Maimonides Midwifery Service (Brooklyn, NY)

The midwives of Maimonides Midwifery Service (MMS) in Brooklyn, NY are proudly celebrating their 10th anniversary. Pioneered in 1993 under the direction of Phyllis Lynn in Borough Park, Brooklyn, MMS now delivers care to the women of Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Sunset Park, and Bushwick. All are multi-ethnic populations that present great challenges and opportunities.

MMS has grown to 12 certified nurse-midwives, including senior staff and recent graduates; all of whom are members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives with hospital admitting privileges. Maimonides Medical Center extends admitting privileges to private practice midwives as well, allowing home birth practitioners and birthing center midwives to use their service as a resource. MMS responsibly covers five private/clinic sites, and provides 24 hour coverage of triage, labor, and delivery.

Maimonides regularly participates in neighborhood health awareness outreach programs, providing educational information regarding women’s health care issues. The staff at MMS helped form a premier voluntary doula program and continually assists in training the women involved.

One of Maimonides highest priorities is the education of student midwives through clinical preceptorship, often allowing students from East Coast university programs to gain clinical experience at their facilities.

Their educational outreach also extends to family practice residents, nurse practitioners, medical students, rotating interns, and EMT students. MMS provides clinical experience in antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum/newborn, well-woman gynecology, and family planning.

The staff at MMS is proud of their service to the women and children they care for, and hope to serve as an example for other midwifery services.
