Summary of Activity:
This quarter the DOR focused on activities at the Annual Meeting and
50th Anniversary celebration at ACNM, as well as continued
work on some major projects.
The Annual Meeting activities
included the Research Forums, Poster presentations, Scholar's Colloquium,
DOR education session, Finding Evidence to Support Practice: Developing
Effective Internet Search Strategies, and joint premier session
with the DOW, Gender Equity in Women's Health and Research: 20th
Century Accomplishments and 21st Century Challenges.
A workshop on developing a research trajectory using a Community
of Scholars was conducted by Elizabeth Jesse and Terri Collins.
The Ortho/ACNM Scholars presented a round table during lunch. This was
well received and a second session, as well as an educational session
to explore funding streams for research is planned for 2006.
The DOR BOG members met with
the MANA Division of Research and Board members at the Annual Meeting
and agreed to serve in an advisory capacity to their group. We discussed
this as a board and sought approval from the BOD to enter into a non-binding,
collaborative relationship to explore research interests common and
important to both organizations. This meeting went well and initial
areas of collaboration will include sharing our respective research
agendas, discussing how our sections working on midwifery practice data
must communicate with one another, collaborating on research educational
sessions, and sharing how we negotiate release of membership information
for research purposes.
The draft research agenda was presented
to the BOD by Leslie Cragin at the Annual Meeting and was accepted.
An education session titled Using the ACNM Research
Agenda to Inform Practice and Influence Politics.
ICM Congress, July 2005, Brisbane,
AU - Dr. Kennedy, as the Co-Chair of the ICM Research Standing Committee
(RSC), has worked with international midwives to conduct four research
workshops on 1) developing guidelines for international research collaboration,
2) evaluating research in developing countries, 3) setting research
priorities, and 4) scientific writing for midwives. Finally, the DOR
and IHC have been working with the ICM RSC to co-host a social event
for midwives to network internationally in research.

Research Advisory Section
(Patricia A. Murphy)
A:
The Survey Advisory Task:
The Survey section was designed
to work closely with the ACNM Senior Staff Researcher (Kerri Schuiling,
CNM) and the ACNM National Office on specific tasks related to membership
surveys. The main goals in this area are related to revising the annual
membership survey for analytic needs and appropriate uses as determined
by the national office, and the review and development of National Office
sponsored Web-based surveys to elicit information from the membership.
Activities since last report:
Data analysis and reporting
of the survey on the ACNM Research Agenda survey was done. The
DOR Survey Section remains ready to assist the national office in revising
the ACNM Membership Survey.
MEMBERS: Peter Johnson, Leah
Albers, Judith Fullerton, Theresa Sipe (survey advisory task). Specific
assistance will be sought from this group for specific projects as needed.
B:
The Survey Requests Task:
Approval of requests to contact
ACNM members for research purposes is shared with the ACNM Senior Staff
Researcher (Kerri Schuiling).
Activities since last report:
Approval was granted for one
project to survey ACNM members at the annual meeting. This was a survey
of CNM/CMs screening practices regarding depression.
MEMBERS: The work of this section
task does not require a general membership.
International Section
(Judith Fullerton)
1. Summary of activity or
key issues since last report
Project list initiated
by selection or assignment of IH section members to various tasks
Communication continued
with ACNM IH Committee; B Anderson willing and supportive of July/August
2007 JMWH special issue and will assist in identifying potential authors
2. Project list
Coordination with
ACNM IH Committee and ACNM Department of Global Outreach to prepare
a "meet and greet" for international researchers at ICM Triennial
Congress, August, 2005 - continues
Decision made to
support DOR in hosting a single "meet and greet", in the interest
of time and money.
Coordination with
Tekoa King, Editor-in-Chief, JMWH, to plan for a JMWH special focus
issue on IH tentatively planned for July/August 2007. - continues
Several potential
authors have already expressed a willingness; two have expressed a commitment.
Database of international
midwifery research being done by ACNM members - project abandoned
IH
section members agreed that keeping this project
"current" would be too burdensome.
A new project was
selected by IH Section members to replace the database project -
ongoing
The
DOR website will contain a blinking cursor that links to
"breaking news" found in
journal articles. International Section members agreed to survey the
international journal databases and to derive a
"Top 10" or "Top 20" list of important perinatal
journals. Members would then divide the journals among the members (reducing
overall workload), and each member would commit to reviewing the table
of contents of each new issue of journals to which they have been assigned.
If important "late breaking news" of interest (e.g. application
to clinical practice, new scientific discovery) is
published, member will alert the Section Chair (sending abstract at
minimum, PDF or full-text article if possible) and writing a summary.
Chair will then forward the summary and the bib
reference to the DOR Chair, for consideration for posting on the DOR
website.
3. Membership
There was discussion about
the process of application to DOR and assignment to Sections, including
discussion of
